Express Entry came is an electronic application management system that has been in place since January 1, 2015 and replace the former first-come, first served system of application processing for permanent residence application. Applicants make an ‘expression of interest’ for immigrating to Canada and, if they are eligible for at least one of the programs, then they enter the Express Entry pool. The federal government and provincial governments, as well as Canadian employers, are then able to select candidates from this pool who will then receive an ‘Invitation to Apply’ (ITA) under one of the programs.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) aims to process applications within six months from the date of submission after being invited. Potential candidates make an expression of interest by creating an Express Entry profile and providing information about their skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other personal information. Candidates are scored through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which is used to rank candidates with scores that reflect their human capital and ability to succeed in the Canadian economy.
